If the typical American midsize sedan had continued to evolve over the past two decades as a V8-powered, rear wheel drive car, the Pontiac G8 GT would be the result. Thankfully for us pour sods who’ve been consigned to understeery front-drive family transport, the Australians went down their own evolutionary road, and now we have GM’s terrific Antipodean answer to four door fun here Stateside.

6.0-liters of classic pushrod smallblock muscle means 0-60 in just under five seconds, along with the kind of music gearheads crave. A slick-shifting six-speed auto with well programmed manual control means accessing the 361hp is as easy as a pampered Mid-American audience would like, and the G8’s refined manners and supple primary ride do nothing to dispel the sense of old school Yank comfort.

The G8’s sheetmetal seems to hit the right note as well, being aggressive enough to engender second glances from bystanders without being overwrought in the manner of Pontiacs of five to ten years ago. The interior is spacious and well put together, continuing the transformation of the General’s product line into one of the leading contenders for affordable substance and style.

That this level of practical and refined transport could be combined with such accessible strait-line urge and fun handling is to the company’s great credit (and bodes well for the upcoming Camaro, which shares the same architecture). About the only apparent downside is a bit too much vertical movement of the body, which makes it slightly harder to push the G8 to the limit. Steering feel is generally good, though there is a bit of slack on-center. Tail-out antics are easy accessed, and the fitment of standard stability control means local owners need only fit season-appropriate tires to enjoy year round thrills.

And despite the G8 GT’s engine size and output, fuel economy is nothing to be ashamed of, thanks to the inherent low friction of the pushrod motor and the efficiency of the six-speed. 20-22mpg was the norm in the city, and the Pontiac would return a quite amazing 28mpg on cruise.

Sadly, timing isn’t on Pontiac’s side. An extinction-level event in the form of tighter fuel economy and carbon regulations mean the lifespan of such affordably exuberant machines as the G8 GT are numbered. The time to enjoy is now.
