The Nissan Maxima has become something of an orphan, now that the firm’s Infiniti division has taken over in producing BMW-baiting performance sedans. Where does that leave the original ‘Four Door Sports Car’?

With a bit of a mixed—if likeable—personality. Denied the balance and steering feel of a classic rear-wheel drive set up, it also suffers a dollop of torque steer, which makes deploying the Maxima’s 290hp something of a challenge at times. Beyond that, though, there’s a comfortable riding, rigid and biddable chassis that has terrific grip and commendable composure. And it will perform more predictably in winter climes than an oversteer-prone rear driver, yet without the weight and fuel economy penalties of AWD.

Nissan continues to hone its continuously variable transmissions, and the result is not just great mileage—never less than low-20’s—even in town, and terrific for such a big, powerful car—but programming that makes the CVT an unobtrusive and pleasant companion.

Perhaps the Nissan’s greatest strength though, is its styling—both inside and out. Not only is the cockpit itself appealing in logic, form and texture, but the view over the flamboyantly shaped hood is a reminder of the voluptuous, wide-fendered forms that define this Maxima to the outside world. Solidify its case is good value; the entire lineup offers the high tech toys of upmarket brands like Acura (and Infiniti) and most of their driving pleasures, at a significant discount.
