2011 Infiniti G37 coupe S AWD

Spicing up Infiniti’s svelte G37 coupe with the Sport package and all-wheel drive makes for a really impressive, well-rounded ride. The two-door was already a good looking, competent machine, but the S trim bolsters its appearance, prowess, and comfort.

Outside, the revised, more aggressive front fascia combines with the multispoke 19” wheels to lend it the air of menace missing in the basic version, while inside, the more cosseting sports seats, with their multitude of extra adjustments put you in the right frame of mind to grasp the gorgeous magnesium shift paddles and charge down your favorite back road.

The G37S wont disappoint, either, with well-controlled body motions, good steering feel, and prodigious resistance to understeer. The combination of a limited slip rear diff and AWD means it will slingshot out of almost any corner, with nary a wasted horsepower.

Speaking of which, the V6’s 330 ponies seem better behaved this year; some 3.7-liter versions of this venerable VQ-series engine are very harsh in their delivery, but this Infiniti’s sings a more cultured tune. Its 7-speed auto tranny programming also appears better resolved, with less of the abrupt or confused downshifts of earlier iterations.

Though it lacks the more human-habitable back seat and larger trunk of the BMW 3-series coupe and its ultimate polish, the G37x two-door is likely to be less troublesome and is over $5000 less when equipped in a similar fashion. It is arguably also more appealing visually—or at least a rarer site on the road. Upping the ante to the S increases the curbside appeal and gives this Infiniti more backroad ability without any real practicality or comfort penalty.
