2011 Kia Forte 5-door SX

Kia’s newest makes an interesting comparison to the ’12 Civic that just left. It looks better to these eyes on its bigger 17-wheels, its interior appears more upscale, and it’s—shockingly—better assembled. The way the two drive is pretty similar, though the Honda has a slight edge in ride quality and quietness. Their engines feel equally refined, which is quite the complement, as Honda is one of the best engine builders—as well as the largest—in the world, and the Kia’s is a larger 2.4-liter. More power (173hp/168lb-ft) makes it quicker, even hooked to an automatic.
The Forte’s 6-speed is smooth and slick, and even has paddles; real world fuel economy was 24mpg for me, a bit down on the slower, manual-gearboxed Civic. While Honda has the better reputation, their products of late have felt warmed over, while Kia is on fire as a company, with home-run products left and right. And they have a much better warranty. But the Forte is no longer the bottom-feeder it was; its sticker is almost the same as Civic’s. Times are a-changin’.
Price range: $17,590-23,640 (all 5-doors)
EPA ratings: 23/32mpg
