When the slinky shape of Audi’s ‘5-series’ coupe first showed Stateside, it was powered by a 354hp, 4.2-liter V8, in the S5. And that seemed right, as you intuitively think something this svelte just must be potent, right? But the only engine you can get in the more mainstream A5 is a four-cylinder with less than half the capacity of that honkin’ eight. Is it enough, or is this a case of (as the English would say) a car that’s, ‘All mouth, no trousers’?
While it is certainly no longer a true sports coupe, the A5 does make a great grand touring machine. Thanks to the technology in this 211hp engine, including twin cams, variable valve lift, FSI direct gasoline injection, and a quick response turbo, it hustles up 258lb-ft of torque just off idle, endowing the A5 with a muscular mien in the cut-and-thrust of urban driving. Thrust tapers off at higher rpm, due to the blower’s small size, but 0-60 is still accomplished in just over 6 seconds.
Helping here, and paying big dividends in fuel economy, is the use of an 8-speed automatic transmission. Expect to see more such ‘boxes in all kinds ...
